It can be difficult to navigate the challenges of raising a child with a disability. Sometimes parents and caregivers simply need a place to connect with other families who truly understand and can offer valuable advice or insight from their own personal experiences. Support groups don’t always have to be face-to-face; connecting with families on platforms like Facebook is a great alternative. Social media groups can help prevent feelings of isolation by conversing with people who understand, and provide a space to gather information and offer and receive support, all from the comfort of home.
Social media groups have another bonus: You can often find customized groups, such as communities of people worldwide that were created for specific disabilities or those with families who are still searching for a diagnosis. You can also search for groups in San Diego that are focused on shared interests, age range or primary language. You may even connect with families that become friends over time.
Below is a list of helpful caregiver Facebook groups. Put the name of each group in the Facebook search bar to start connecting. If you know of similar groups not listed, we would love to hear about them. Please email editor@sandiegofamily.com with “FF Facebook groups” in the subject line. If you’re not on Facebook, start a text group with families who share similar interests, diagnosis or needs to create a supportive network.
